The Story of Christopher Pittman, an Antidepressant Murder, and How Chris May Still Be Denied Justice
| Written by Sarah Cain Sunday, 05 September 2010 03:48 |
Christopher Pittman was 12 years old when he fatally shot both of his grandparents, just before setting fire to their house. He was intoxicated with antidepressants.
After running away one night, state troopers picked him up and took him to an institutional facility for troubled kids. Whilst there, he was first prescribed Paxil for mild depression. When taken out of the facility by family members, he was taken to his grandparents, in the hope that the new atmosphere would help him. He was immediately taken off of Paxil by a new doctor, without a weaning process, and was prescribed Zoloft. Chris began to complain about side effects, including a burning sensation under his skin and difficulty sleeping. Instead of removing the new medication, the doctor doubled his dosage. Five days later, Chris committed the double murder. The doctor was never charged for malpractice, or his involvement in the murders. Instead, Chris was arrested, imprisoned for three years prior to his trial, tried in an adult court at age 15, found guilty of murder, and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.
His right to a speedy trial, as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment, was ignored. No reasonable person would consider holding a 12-year-old for three years awaiting trial as constitutional. For that reason alone, the court should have let Chris go, and in less corrupt times, it would have. However, it was much easier for prosecutors to get a conviction against a 15-year-old, who looked more criminal after spending 3 years behind bars, than it would have been to try a 12-year-old in adult court. We believe all of it was carefully orchestrated by the local court and law enforcement officials, as a way of illegally and unconstitutionally destroying a 12-year-old, who no jury would condemn. This case is the embodiment of everything that is wrong with the juvenile justice system.
In 2005, the Supreme Court (Roper vs. Simmons) banned the execution of children, because such an act ignores the differences between children and adults, and the potential corrigibility of young offenders. Based upon the spirit of that ruling, it should likewise be illegal to try any child as an adult, because such trials frequently accomplish equivalent punishments.

| South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster | |
Chris has now been incarcerated for almost nine years, and was just granted a new trial by Circuit Judge Roger Young. The judge said that Chris' attorneys were ineffective, and a plea deal was never given as an option. Upon learning these events, the Attorney General of South Carolina, Henry McMaster began interfering with the due process of the court. He has made it his personal mission to prevent Chris from getting a new trial. We have to ponder about what sort of person would deny somebody a new trial, after the inmate was convicted under all those mitigating circumstances involving his responsibility. Perhaps more prudent would be to question what McMaster has to lose if a new trial does take place. After all, this is not the sort of trial that a State's Attorney General would normally become involved in, so we are pondering about who is pulling the strings.
As a result, we did some digging into Henry McMaster and found that he has a record of accepting dubious "donations". He hired lawyers with state money, and then later received donations from them whilst in his employment. When caught, he returned the money while maintaining that he "did nothing wrong".
We would like to request that all of our readers express their outrage toward Henry McMaster, and pass the word along about Chris Pittman, so that he may at last be given a fair trial.
We are also on the lookout for the prosecutor's guide that the pharmaceutical companies give to prosecutors to help them ensure maximum convictions for people who have had pharmaceutically-induced, psychotic, violent episodes. The purpose of this guide is to ensure that few precedent setting victories take place, and that the effects of these drugs remain out of the media. Pharmaceutical company lawyers have actually become involved in such cases directly, and have threatened kids saying "shut up or else", as happened during the Columbine shooting lawsuit that was dropped. We covered that last point in Naturally Good Magazine, Issue #1.

What is wrong with this Henry McMaster that he would not only allow this to happen to this child but to continue to do him this injustice When is this world going to learn mental inbalance is a real thing and when will they learn the right way to treat it. I believe this man needs some mental help not to be able to see what he is doing to this child.SHAME ON YOU McMASTER.

I believe that Chris Pittman is entitled to a new trial. These medications do produce serious side effects to some people. One of the jurors decided this childs fate by saying "millions of people take these drugs, why did it have this effect on him only". Well my friend I can tell you the answer to that question. Everyones chemistry and make up is different. Different drugs effect different people differently. You don't have to be too smart to know that. That is why doctos always tell you not to shart your drugs. And, I can also tell you that by my personal experience with an antidepressant drug, that I had some horrible, horrible side effects. similar to madness.
I say the child was not in his right mind. These drugs may do some good for some people, but not everyone. I know, I am one of those people. I do not know how a jury could say he was a cold blooded killer. I think his state of mind had a lot to do with his actions.

The SSRI's are among the most studied drugs in the world and nowhere in the literature is there any evidence to support the claims that it makes people into homicidal maniacs. In fact I would venture to say there is a much stronger case based on this kind of voodoo science that Aspirin is far more dangerous since almost every murderer, serial killer, or criminal has at one time taken that "poison" known as Aspirin. When "so-called Credible Sources" publish this garbage while ignoring the research I know their credibility is suspect. The simple fact is sometimes people do bad things.
As a professional I have yet to see a case where there was not "red flags" prior to the crimes. To say these events are unexplained and "out of nowhere" is just plain incorrect. A carefully done psychological investigation always reveals anticedents to the behaviors and clear indication of risk factors.

I fully believe that Chris should be set free. I know what anti- depressants can do to a person, i take them myself. To give them to a 12 year old boy, whose brain is still developing, is WRONG!! of course he could have adverse side affects, and then to imprison a 12 year old child for 3 years before he gets to go to trial, again WRONG!! And then to convict him for 30 years WRONG!! It annoys me greatly that there are still people out there who still only see black and white!! any drugs wether given by a doctor or taken freely can make a person do things they wouldnt usually do. If taken freely you guilty i can understand that. But he was 12.....just a boy.

And just because it hasnt happened in the past, doesnt mean it cant happen. If your the so called "professional" you say you are, you would realise he was 12 years old, and prescribed a prescription drug. He was still developing!! how can you say for sure that it couldnt have that effect, you CANT!! every person is made up differantly, you CANT say for sure that the drug he was taking didnt make him do this. Your WRONG!!!

Amen. It is also important that "as a professional", he can never allow himself to see the red flags, because doing so would mean accepting the fact that he hurts children for a living. His profession really stretches the boundaries of the term "professional", as well as the term "ethics". The evidence is there, and I'd be happy to fill up his e-mail with documents. Maybe he'll at least watch 'Prescription For Manslaughter' (whenever we finish it) where the first 30 minutes catalogs how EVERY school massacre (every case) in history involved these drugs. In fact, I'll just publicly dare him to find me a single modern massacre involving young killers that didn't involve these drugs. We'll be waiting for it with baited breath. The burden of evidence on him is much easier than what he requires from us. He has only to cite one case in all of history. Personally, I wouldn't bet on him.

I am so sad to read/hear of this. I was perscribed Zoloft for depression some years ago. I took myself off this medication because i felt out of control and homicidal. I was reacting to things in a very violent manner. I called suicide hotline int he middle of the night because I needed to talk to someone. They asked me if I wanted to hurt myself and I told them, 'no, i want to hurt other people'. the next day i stopped taking this medication.
My heart goes out to this boy and his family. I hope justice will be served.

Everyone should fight to get rid of Henry McMaster, he should be ran out of the state. Chris Pittman should have been given professional psychiatric help. Not prison, he was 12, what if that were his own son. I've taken Zoloft and tried to take my own life, I was haven nightmares about the devil and evil crap. It scared me so much that I told my husband I wanted to hurt myself or someone else. He helped me get off of the medication and I was taking 25 mil and Chris took 50mil. That is nuts at 12 years. McMaster needs to be ran out of office so someone with real concerns for children lives will be there to protect kids from pharmaceutical companies and makers like Zoloft. Chris Pittman should have received help not a jail cell. McMaster is more evil than the crime itself, what kind of man crucifies a 12 year old that obviously needs professional help. McMaster's you are a disappointing man that only cares about yourself, which is enough reason for you to be taken out of office, your there to protect and serve, not crucify and destroy more lives.

Apparently a judge ruled that Chris has the right to a new trial. Don't know when that will happen. The above-linked article was dated August 6, 2010. Halleluiah!

Always look behind the curtain and see why someone is doing the things their doing. This poor little boy was not in his right mind, he was given these medications and as a child took them. He had a reaction like one would have with a medicine that gave hives or vomiting you can see that kind of reaction. However, with this medication he was probably hallucinating and did not know what was going on. One can see physical symptoms but not mental ones as drugs as the culprit. This Man Mr. McMaster has some sort of mental defect himself, and perhaps looking into this case is in someway acknowledging his own defects. This is a tragedy, as this now young man has to deal with what he did to his Grandparents. Let him out. However, he will need people to help him learn to live on his own as he lost years of learning on how to live on the outside.
